Wee things for a wee post

With one thing and another, I haven’t shot much in the month of August. A kayaking outing or two didn’t result in anything good and I just didn’t have the where-with-all to get out for mushrooms as much as I usually do. Partially it was the heat and humidity, and partially because I had other things to do. Some obligations and some just other fun stuff. The camera was never far away though and when opportunities arose, I was ready. Like this little Green Frog hanging out on a rock next to the dock. It’s only about 1 inch long and pretty chill. Of all the frog species, I find Greenies to be the most relaxed with humans.

Another frog encounter, this time with a Northern Leopard that was even smaller than the Greenie. I saw it leap from the trail I was on to the side and luckily saw where it landed because that camouflage is so good they can disappear in an instant. As it froze in place I could get the tripod very close with the macro lens and voila – crouching frog hidden amphibian!

Keeping on with small frogs, here’s a Spring Peeper clinging to the side of a tree as a group of amateur naturalists rambled around in the woods. I noticed it spring to this spot and could get in for a handheld shot. That leg knocks me out! It’s about as big as this species ever gets – an inch or a tad over.

During the summer, my husband and I go out into the front yard to look for toads just before we go to bed. They’re so cute and funny and we love them. Last night no toads, but three frogs – a Leopard, a Wood and the tiniest Spring Peeper I’ve ever seen. Its front toes were like threads and it’s hard to believe there are bones in them. It was about 1/2 an inch long and probably had a tail not long ago. Amazing little thing was walking up my garage door. I hope it can dodge the many things that would happily eat it, including other frogs!

Well, sorry for the short post. I am working on some other photos, but they’re not ready yet.

    1. Happy to be of service! Frogs and toads are so delightful. In summer before bed, hubby and I go on toad patrol – just checking the driveway for them. They’re so fun. And before he mows the lawn, I do herp herding and get them all away from the terrible mower!

  1. I love frogs. I’m looking out at my birdbath right now and a little Cuban frog is half in the water just chilling..
